To understand its theological and historical context, we need to look at both Paul\u2019s argument and the situation of the Roman Christians.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Historical Context<\/b><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Division Between Jewish and Gentile Believers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Roman church was likely composed of both Jewish and Gentile Christians. Tensions may have existed as Gentiles were being welcomed into the church while many Jews rejected Jesus.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paul\u2019s teaching helps the church understand that God\u2019s covenantal promises to Israel have not failed, and that Gentile inclusion does not mean Jewish exclusion.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Persecution and Identity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around the time Romans was written (mid to late 50s AD), the early church was facing persecution and internal debates about the law, circumcision, and Jewish customs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paul\u2019s message reassures Gentile Christians of their secure place in God\u2019s plan, while also reminding them to remain humble and not boast over Israel (cf. Romans 11).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><b>Theological Context<\/b><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>God\u2019s Sovereignty in Salvation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paul defends God&#8217;s right to choose whom He will save, stating that not all physical descendants of Abraham are true Israel (Romans 9:6-8).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He uses Old Testament examples such as Isaac over Ishmael and Jacob over Esau to demonstrate that God&#8217;s election is not based on works or human effort, but on His divine purpose and mercy (Romans 9:10-13).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This teaching emphasizes <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sola Gratia<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (salvation by grace alone), aligning with the broader biblical theme that salvation is entirely a work of God.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Human Responsibility<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paul anticipates objections to God&#8217;s justice and affirms that while God shows mercy, He also hardens whom He wills (e.g., Pharaoh, Romans 9:17-18).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, he does not portray humans as robots\u2014rather, God&#8217;s justice and mercy are beyond full human comprehension.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>God\u2019s Purpose for Israel and the Gentiles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paul shows that God\u2019s plan has always included Gentiles in His people and that the rejection by many Israelites is part of God&#8217;s sovereign design to make room for Gentile inclusion (Romans 9:24-26).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, Paul expresses deep sorrow for his people (Romans 9:1-3), underscoring that their rejection is not final (a theme expanded in Romans 10\u201311).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h1><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/ROM.9.NIV\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Romans 9\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/h1>\n<p><b>Paul\u2019s Anguish Over Israel<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I speak the truth in Christ\u2014I am not lying, my conscience confirms it through the Holy Spirit\u2014 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For I could wish that I myself were cursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my people, those of my own race, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the people of Israel. Theirs is the adoption to sonship; theirs the divine glory, the covenants, the receiving of the law, the temple worship and the promises. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Theirs are the patriarchs, and from them is traced the human ancestry of the Messiah, who is God over all, forever praised! Amen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>God\u2019s Sovereign Choice<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is not as though God\u2019s word had failed. For not all who are descended from Israel are Israel. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nor because they are his descendants are they all Abraham\u2019s children. On the contrary, \u201cIt is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, it is not the children by physical descent who are God\u2019s children, but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as Abraham\u2019s offspring. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For this was how the promise was stated: \u201cAt the appointed time I will return, and Sarah will have a son.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not only that, but Rebekah\u2019s children were conceived at the same time by our father Isaac. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, before the twins were born or had done anything good or bad\u2014in order that God\u2019s purpose in election might stand: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not by works but by him who calls\u2014she was told, \u201cThe older will serve the younger.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just as it is written: \u201cJacob I loved, but Esau I hated.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What then shall we say? Is God unjust? Not at all! <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For he says to Moses,<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI will have mercy on whom I have mercy,<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">16<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It does not, therefore, depend on human desire or effort, but on God\u2019s mercy. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">17<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Scripture says to Pharaoh: \u201cI raised you up for this very purpose, that I might display my power in you and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">18<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore God has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy, and he hardens whom he wants to harden.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">19<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of you will say to me: \u201cThen why does God still blame us? For who is able to resist his will?\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But who are you, a human being, to talk back to God? \u201cShall what is formed say to the one who formed it, \u2018Why did you make me like this?\u2019\u2006\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">21<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for special purposes and some for common use?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">22<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What if God, although choosing to show his wrath and make his power known, bore with great patience the objects of his wrath\u2014prepared for destruction? <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">23<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What if he did this to make the riches of his glory known to the objects of his mercy, whom he prepared in advance for glory\u2014 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">24<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">even us, whom he also called, not only from the Jews but also from the Gentiles? <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">25<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As he says in Hosea:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI will call them \u2018my people\u2019 who are not my people;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and I will call her \u2018my loved one\u2019 who is not my loved one,\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">26<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and,<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn the very place where it was said to them,<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018You are not my people,\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">there they will be called \u2018children of the living God.\u2019\u2006\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">27<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isaiah cries out concerning Israel:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThough the number of the Israelites be like the sand by the sea,<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only the remnant will be saved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">28<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the Lord will carry out<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">his sentence on earth with speed and finality.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">29<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is just as Isaiah said previously:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUnless the Lord Almighty<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">had left us descendants,<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we would have become like Sodom,<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we would have been like Gomorrah.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Israel\u2019s Unbelief<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">30<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What then shall we say? That the Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have obtained it, a righteousness that is by faith; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">31<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but the people of Israel, who pursued the law as the way of righteousness, have not attained their goal. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">32<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">33<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As it is written:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSee, I lay in Zion a stone that causes people to stumble<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and a rock that makes them fall,<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the one who believes in him will never be put to shame.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discussion Questions<\/span><\/h1>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>God\u2019s Mercy and Human Effort &#8211; <\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Romans 9:10\u201316.<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Paul makes a clear point: God\u2019s mercy is not given because of human effort or works. How does that truth challenge our natural tendency to &#8220;earn&#8221; favor with God? Different Christians understand this in different ways. How do you personally understand the balance between God&#8217;s sovereignty and human responsibility?
