We continue our journey through the longest book in the Testament. Our previous studies are available in our blog section on the website.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This week is Romans 10, to make this time useful:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">See Short Note on Context<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/ROM.10.NIV\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Romans 10 <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(see link and listed below)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look through the discussion questions (at end of this note).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Context<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Romans 9, Paul expressed deep sorrow for his people (Romans 9:1-3) and their apparent rejection of Jesus by the majority of ethnic Israel. Romans 10-11 underscores that their rejection is not final.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Historical Context<\/b><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Division Between Jewish and Gentile Believers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Roman church was likely composed of both Jewish and Gentile Christians. Tensions may have existed as Gentiles were being welcomed into the church while many Jews rejected Jesus.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paul\u2019s teaching helps the church understand that God\u2019s covenantal promises to Israel have not failed, and that Gentile inclusion does not mean Jewish exclusion.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Persecution and Identity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around the time Romans was written (mid to late 50s AD), the early church was facing persecution and internal debates about the law, circumcision, and Jewish customs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paul\u2019s message reassures Gentile Christians of their secure place in God\u2019s plan, while also reminding them to remain humble and not boast over Israel (cf. Romans 11).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><b>Theological Context<\/b><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Christ\u2019s Fullfillment of the Law<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cChrist is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Law was meant to point to Christ (cf. Galatians 3:24).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Justification now comes through faith, not works.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the early church, this was key to uniting Jewish and Gentile believers.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>The Simplicity of the Gospel <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Romans 10:9-13<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Salvation is available through:<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Confession: \u201cJesus is Lord\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Belief: \u201cGod raised Him from the dead\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This message is universal: \u201cEveryone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No distinction between Jew and Gentile\u2014grace is available to all.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Purpose of \u201cThe Church\u201d<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Necessity of Preaching and Hearing (Romans 10:14-17)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The chain: Sent \u2192 Preach \u2192 Hear \u2192 Believe \u2192 Call \u2192 Saved.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Israel\u2019s Responsibility<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paul quotes Isaiah and Moses to show that Israel\u2019s rejection was prophesied.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">God is portrayed as patiently reaching out: \u201cAll day long I have held out my hands&#8230;\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shows the grace and longsuffering of God despite rebellion.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Roman\u2019s 10 Directives (to IronMen)\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trust Christ, not their works<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preach the gospel<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pray for the lost with compassion like Paul<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stand firm in truths rooted in Scripture: by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h1><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/ROM.10.NIV\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Romans 10\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1Brothers and sisters, my heart\u2019s desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved. 2For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. 3Since they did not know the righteousness of God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God\u2019s righteousness. 4Christ is the culmination of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5Moses writes this about the righteousness that is by the law: \u201cThe person who does these things will live by them.\u201d 6But the righteousness that is by faith says: \u201cDo not say in your heart, \u2018Who will ascend into heaven?\u2019\u2006\u201d (that is, to bring Christ down) 7\u201cor \u2018Who will descend into the deep?\u2019\u2006\u201d (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8But what does it say? \u201cThe word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,\u201d that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim: 9If you declare with your mouth, \u201cJesus is Lord,\u201d and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. 11As Scripture says, \u201cAnyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.\u201d 12For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile\u2014the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13for, \u201cEveryone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: \u201cHow beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">16But not all the Israelites accepted the good news. For Isaiah says, \u201cLord, who has believed our message?\u201d 17Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ. 18But I ask: Did they not hear? Of course they did:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTheir voice has gone out into all the earth,<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">their words to the ends of the world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">19Again I ask: Did Israel not understand? First, Moses says,<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI will make you envious by those who are not a nation;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I will make you angry by a nation that has no understanding.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20And Isaiah boldly says,<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was found by those who did not seek me;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I revealed myself to those who did not ask for me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">21But concerning Israel he says,<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAll day long I have held out my hands<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to a disobedient and obstinate people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discussion Questions<\/span><\/h1>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What does Paul mean when he says, \u201cChrist is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes\u201d (Romans 10:4)?<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does this affect our understanding of the Old Testament Law today?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why does Paul emphasize that salvation is by faith and not by works (Romans 10:6-10)?<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does this doctrine of justification by faith alone shape the core of the gospel?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paul says, \u201cFaith comes by hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ\u201d (Romans 10:17).<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What does this teach us about the role of preaching and Scripture in someone\u2019s salvation?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does Romans 10 defend the idea that the gospel is for all people, not just for the Jews (Romans 10:12-13)?<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why was this significant in the early church, and why is it still important today?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Application Questions<\/span><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paul expresses deep sorrow and prayer for the salvation of Israel (Romans 10:1).<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who are the people in your life that you are burdened for spiritually, and how can you begin or renew praying for them?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you confess with your mouth&#8230; and believe in your heart&#8230;\u201d (Romans 10:9):<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does this verse help you evaluate your own faith and walk with Christ?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have you truly confessed Jesus as Lord in both word and lifestyle?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paul challenges the church with a chain: \u201cHow will they hear unless someone preaches?\u201d (Romans 10:14-15).<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How are you personally involved in sharing the gospel, either directly or through supporting those who are?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Romans 10 confronts religious sincerity without truth (v. 2).<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Example where we can pursue less \u201czeal\u201d and more biblical truth?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How can we as men stay grounded in God\u2019s Word rather than cultural or emotional zeal?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Feb 5 &#8211; Iron Men Romans 10\u00a0 This Thursday, Feb 5th, we will be meeting IN THE WILDCAT at 7:30am.
